I earned my B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989. Following graduation from UNC, I began my teaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University. After completing my M.A. in Creative Writing at Hollins College, I taught for a year at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington before returning to graduate school at Florida State University.
Since completing my Ph.D. 1995, I have taught at a variety of post-secondary institutions, large and small, two-year and four-year, public and private: Western Carolina University (1996-98), Nash Community College (1998), Barton College (1999), Forsyth Technical Community College (1999-2000), Salem College (1999-2001), Virginia Commonwealth University (2001-2013), Lenoir-Rhyne University (2013-2018), Catawba Valley Community College (2018-2020), Guilford Technical Community College (2020), and High Point University (2021-).

In addition to teaching, I maintain a blog that focuses on my work as a teacher and a writer, two roles that intertwine when I write assignments with my students, as I frequently do. More of my writing can be found in the pages of Black Warrior Review, The Dos Passos Review, Fifty-Plus, The Hollins Critic, INDY Week, New Delta Review, The North Carolina Review of Books, and Sanctuary.

I think that the strongest narrative is Skylar Bollman’s narrative “Stress? Never Heard of It” in section 1103.19. The use of dialogue, vivid details, and choice of title all add the enhance the reader’s experience. Skylar is candid about her experience which allows for the reader to sympatheize and make a connection with her.
